Welcome!

I'm an archaeologist and for over thirty years have explored the amazing legacy left by Neolithic and Bronze Age people, who lived in Britain and Ireland, over three thousand years ago. They transformed the landscape by creating impressive and enigmatic monuments, including chambered cairns, stone circles and rock art. For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by the often silent and desolate ruins that endure today. Who created them? How were they used? Over the years, my investigations have sought to reanimate these ancient places, revealing that many were venues where people engaged in vibrant and dynamic sensory experiences with light and sound. However, this isn’t just about looking back in time. My encounters with the remnants of the distant past have also enriched how I perceive the world today.

Between 2018 and 2024, I worked as an interpretation specialist at Kilmartin Museum, situated at the heart of a remarkable complex of ancient monuments on Scotland's west coast. There, I played a key role in developing an ambitious new exhibition, a project that deepened my understanding of how our contemporary lives connect to ancient history. As an independent researcher, I continue my study of prehistoric monuments, sharing my discoveries online, at conferences and through publications in books and journals. I also convey my ideas with film, photography, collage, animation, painting and drawing. For more information, visit my Journal and check out the Projects page or search for details on specific topics and locations.

To support my research, I have a day job at MONUMENTAL, the heritage consultancy I founded in 2002. There, I merge my archaeological knowledge with creative skills to visualize and communicate ideas about the past for heritage organisations, visitor attractions, museums and the academic community.

I also sell some personal creative works through MONUMENTAL. Click the link below to find out more.
